Label TextO. Winston Link American (1914-2001) BUCK STEWART CALLING TRAINS AT THE ROANOKE STATION Roanoke, Virginia, 1956 L2004.11.51 Harry T. "Buck" Stewart was finishing a long career with the N&W when Winston Link photographed him in August 1956. Stewart called the trains from a position on the west side of the passenger concourse, demolished in 1992, which bridged over three tracks. The windows to the right looked down the tracks towards the west. The huge south windows, seen in the background, were disassembled and reinstalled in the end of the present station lobby when the concourse was removed. Fifty years ago travel was an occasion, and people dressed up for their journeys, as can be seen in the careful attire of the two women in the background and the man wearing a coat, tie and Panama hat-in August.
