Label TextMathew B. Brady American, 1823−1896 Major General George Brinton McClellan, 1861 Albumen print (photograph) George McClellan (1826−1885) commanded the Army of the Potomac in the early years of the Civil War. Near the top of his class at the University of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the privileged young officer saw himself as intellectually and socially superior to backwoods politicians like Lincoln, with whom he was frequently at odds. Mathew Brady’s firm led the American photography market by appealing to sophisticated clientele like McClellan with large and handsome photographic portraits like this one. Gift of David L.
