Photographs record the great care and expense undertaken at every stop on this journey, as each city competed to demonstrate the enormity of its respect for the president and the depth of its grief. Amid the banners, flags, and garlands decorating this train, the citizens of Cleveland added a large portrait of the deceased president—a photograph taken by Mathew Brady on January 8, 1864.
