Label TextPossibly Henry H. Reeves American, b. 1844 The Engine “Nashville” of the Lincoln Funeral Train, 1865 Albumen print (photograph) This photo shows the new locomotive assigned to Lincoln’s funeral train in Cleveland, Ohio, before it continued on to Columbus. Photographs record the great care and expense undertaken at every stop on this journey, as each city competed to demonstrate the enormity of its respect for the president and the depth of its grief. Amid the banners, flags, and garlands decorating this train, the citizens of Cleveland added a large portrait of the deceased president—a photograph taken by Mathew Brady on January 8, 1864.
