Early, Undertaker, 1865 Albumen print (photograph) On April 22, 1865, a team of eight black horses pulled this funeral hearse through the streets of Philadelphia, Pa., from Broad Street Station to Independence Hall. The next day, more than 300,000 people viewed Lincoln’s open casket in the same room where the Declaration of Independence had been signed. At times the line stretched for three miles, and many mourners waited for more than five hours to pay their respects. Gift of David L. Hack and Museum purchase, with funds from Walter P.
