Photograph of a train with American flags.This is from _Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the War_ (Hack Collection No. 2].Label TextEngine and Tender of Lincoln Funeral Train, Philadelphia, Pa., 1865 American Albumen print (photograph) On April 21, 1865, Lincoln’s body began a circuitous 1,654-mile journey by train from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Ill., where he was buried on May 4. Along the way, the Lincoln Special made stops for public viewings of the casket at major cities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and Indiana. The funeral train arrived at Broad Street Station in Philadelphia at 4:30pm on April 22, 1865, pulled by this elaborately decorated locomotive. After an overnight viewing at Independence Hall, it traveled on to New York City. Gift of David L. Hack and Museum purchase, with funds from Walter P.
