Label TextJim Dine American, b. 1935 Red Sitting with Me, 1996 Grey Sitting with Me, 1996 Intaglio prints Jim Dine transforms familiar, everyday objects—a set of tools, a valentine, a bathrobe—into subjects with remarkable power and a sense of dark mystery. Here, the artist’s bathrobe becomes a searching self portrait. By working and reworking the subject, the empty robes seem to fill with a distinctly human presence. Exploring the question “Who am I?” Dine answers, not by drawing his own face, but by meditating on a beloved article of clothing.
