DescriptionPortrait of Abraham LincolnLabel TextAfter Samuel Montague Fassett American, 1825−1910 Abraham Lincoln, ca. 1876 Lithograph (print) Though photographs were popular and affordable, other printmaking techniques, such as etching and lithography, allowed publishers more flexibility in size and decoration. This lithographic print is carefully copied from a photo taken in Chicago on October 4, 1859. It shows Lincoln before he grew his famous beard in late 1860, a change in appearance that sparked great curiosity among the public. The small etched vignette to the lower left is the Emancipation Group, a statue of the president and a freed slave created by American sculptor Thomas Ball (1819−1911) and erected in Lincoln Park in Washington, D.C., in 1876.
