DescriptionThis is an albumen carte de visite depicting Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865); President of the United States, 1861-1865.Label TextAfter Thomas Nast American, 1840−1902 President Lincoln Entering Richmond, April 4, 1865, 1868 Published by Sarony & Co., Photographers, New York, N.Y. Albumen print (photograph) No photographers were present when Lincoln visited Richmond, Va., on April 4, 1865, shortly after the city’s surrender. Illustrator Thomas Nast later drew the early moments of the president’s arrival based on the recollections of others. Freed slaves recognized Lincoln from published images and rushed to greet him. Nast’s depiction of this spectacle appeared as a wood engraving in Harper’s Weekly in 1866. To create the object seen here, the New York studio photographer Napoleon Sarony seems to have photographed Nast’s original illustration and distributed this image in carte-de-visite size.
