This lithographic print is carefully copied from a photo taken in Chicago on October 4, 1859. It shows Lincoln before he grew his famous beard in late 1860, a change in appearance that sparked great curiosity among the public. The small etched vignette to the lower left is the Emancipation Group, a statue of the president and a freed slave created by American sculptor Thomas Ball (1819−1911) and erected in Lincoln Park in Washington, D.C., in 1876.
