DescriptionImage of the composer Philip Glass, composed of tiny squares set with bold hatch marks in black ink.Label TextChuck Close American, 1940-2021 Phil Crosshatch, 2010 Engraving with embossment on Twinrocker handmade paper Chuck Close met the minimalist composer Philip Glass in New York, when both were young and unknown artists. For this portrait of his friend, Close used a 1968 photo that he has repeatedly enlarged, using a grid, for paintings, drawings, and even fingerprint paintings. He continually revisits and adds to this series, provoking Glass to comment, "I am to Chuck what Haystacks were to Monet."
