DescriptionThis is a photograph of a man standing in profile against a wall with markings and wearing a costume.Label TextFlor Garduño Mexican, b. 1957 Caballero águila (Eagle Knight), 1986 Gelatin silver print (photograph), printed 1993 Flor Garduño’s photographs concentrate on the contemporary presence of indigenous cultures in Mexico and Central America. Trained in the documentary tradition, she is committed to portraying the contemporary moment, but her use of gentle lighting and soft tones also gives her subjects a historical quality, as if her images are set in the past. As seen here, the resulting photographs appear both historically rich and freshly modern, suggesting there is little distinction between the ancestral past and today.
