DescriptionThis is a series of nine photographs that depict Death Valley in a pattern of geometric tones.
Label TextMillee Tibbs American, born 1976 Death Valley (One in 9 Variations), 2014 9 archival digital prints (photographs) By folding her photographs of the American West like origami, Millee Tibbs questions the illusionistic qualities of photographic images. As seen in this series of images of Death Valley, the folds add contrasting details that embellish the rocky peaks and plunging valleys represented by the photograph. But the folds also leave geometric patterns that contrast with nature’s organic lines. As Tibbs has said, “The fantasy of an untouched and untouchable vista is interrupted.” Museum purchase 2019.5.1
