Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 Sand Dunes, Sunrise, Death Valley National Monument, California, 1948 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 Adams often balanced his panoramic photographs with intimate images of nature’s smaller details. While the distant photographs convey nature’s overwhelming glory, the human-scale particulars make the natural world seem more personal. In Sand Dunes, Sunrise, a sensuous curved line runs along a dune’s peak like a path that leads us into the empty distance. In Oak Tree, Snowstorm, to the right, the tree’s soaring branches offer welcoming shelter from the snow. Gift of Dr. and Mrs. T.
