DescriptionThis work is made of apparently purple glass (which is actually dichroic: it appears bluish-purple in reflected light and ruby-red in transmitted light) which has yellow-to-orange applied and marvered splotches on the exterior. It is somewhat ovoid in shape with a small round opening at the top. The vase is encased (or overlaid) with a thick layer of colorless glass. This type of object ia sometimes called “paperweight vases” because of their similarity with the thick colorless glass overlay used when making paperweights.
ProvenanceThe artist; Otto Wittmann, Jr.; John Wittmann (Otto's son); gifted to the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk. VA.
