DescriptionThis sand was collected by Kathleen Edwards, independent researcher, on March 27, 2022. Ms. Edwards shares the sand's significance: “City Beach is a dear place. It opened in 1935 for the Black community during segregation. It was great to be able to meet with our friends in an unprotested environment, where we felt safe. We could go fishing and crabbing, we brought tons of food to share with others, walking through gravel, glass, rocks and debris, and disrespectful white residents, just to get here.” Atelier NL sand archive sample identification number: Norfolk-US-0043.
