DescriptionThis sand was collected by Sam Allen, baseball player, on June 22, 2022. We collected sand near what would have been home plate, in a baseball field long since gone. Mr. Allen shares the sand's significance: “This is a field where I started, growing up. I played semi-pro baseball here. This is the start of my career, right here in Portsmouth.” In the late 1950s, Mr. Allen played left field for three teams in the Negro Leagues: Kansas City Monarchs, Raleigh Tigers, and Memphis Red Sox. Atelier NL sand archive sample identification number: Portsmouth-US-0045.
