Label TextUnknown photographer French, active 1850s Alphonse Louis Poitevin, printer and publisher French, 1819–1882 Central Marketplace in Paris, view of the southwest pavilion during construction (Halles Centrales à Paris, Vue du Pavillon Sud-Ouest pendant le Montage), ca. 1855, from the journal Revue générale de l’Architecture et des Travaux Publics, 1856, plate 41 Photo lithograph In nearly continuous operation since the tenth century, Les Halles was the main food and grain marketplace in central Paris. Napoléon III identified Les Halles as a showpiece for urban renewal and ordered a new building. Built between 1853 and 1857, a series of trellised iron and glass pavilions opened the market up to light and air, to great visual effect. This view, an early experiment in the practicality of photomechanical reproduction, was published in an architectural journal using a lithographic process developed by the photographic innovator Alphonse Poitevin.
