Perrache Railroad Station, ca. 1856–61, from Chemins de Fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée, ca. 1861 Albumen print from collodion negative Rail construction linked city and country, opening up rural France to urbanites, just as country people migrated to the cities. At Lyon, in 1855, a new central station with its modern infrastructure transformed sleepy city streets into gaslit quarters crowded with travelers and migrants. The new rail facilities were built with human labor in vast public works projects, and in Édouard Denis Baldus’ photograph one such force is on display, posed with the tools of their trade.
