DescriptionPhotograph depicting a look across Granby Street, in Norfolk, VA.Label TextCity Hall Avenue, Looking East across Granby Street, Norfolk, ca. 1896 American Published by Harry Cowles Mann, ca. 1909–24 Gelatin silver print (photograph) Mann sometimes republished photographs of downtown Norfolk taken by other artists, signing the prints as products of his studio, as seen on the lower left of this image. These might have been paired with more recent pictures by Mann of the same sites, showing before-and-after views. Norfolk’s City Hall is at the center of this photograph, and Town Back Creek, seen in the foreground, was soon filled in to extend City Hall Avenue and facilitate further urban growth.
