Cuba, 1960) Tormenta de Imágenes (Storm of Images), 1990 Gelatin-silver print Museum purchase and gift of the Photography Alliance of the Chrysler Museum of Art 92.18 Born in Cuba, Martinez-Cañas left the island when she was only three months old. Through her photography, she searches for her Cuban heritage by using the fragments of family pictures and stories as inspiration for ideas. Photographing since the age of ten, Martinez-Cañas contact-prints her negatives after cutting and shaping them to create designs based on Caribbean vegetation, old documents, and maps of Cuba. Her work conveys a multi-layered language of personal symbols and references through formal, often abstract presentations.
