DescriptionPlate; part of a set consisting of a plate, soup plate, plate, platter, butter dish, bowl and enamel cover. Made for the Portugese market; has arms of Saldanha de Albuquerque on the pieces.Label TextChinese Export Platter, ca. 1760 Porcelain with enamel and gilded decoration Gift of the Winfield Foundation 55.3.13 This platter, along with the dish cover, formed part of a large dinner service commissioned by the Saldanha de Albuquerque family of Portugal. This service is one of the most unusual Chinese export services to have been produced during the eighteenth century. Instead of typical Chinese-inspired floral decorations, the Saldanha service is painted with appropriate foodstuffs. On this platter, a large ham replaces the usual coat of arms, and it is surrounded by fruits, fowl, and vegetables.
