Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 The Golden Gate before the Bridge, San Francisco, California, 1932 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 Adams was raised in his family’s home on the northwestern edge of San Francisco, near Lobos Creek and Baker Beach. Nearby perches offered Adams panoramic views of the entrance to the San Francisco Bay, like this one, which he made just months before construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. His early experiences of nature in the Bay Area, his regular family visits to Yosemite, and an education that emphasized the belief that nature is an expression of the divine all proved instrumental in shaping Adams’s artistic career.
