The trollies transported thousands of workers and stimulated real estate development along their lines, shaping the pattern of urbanization. The substantial vehicles seen here at the Newport News Shipyard entrance on 28th Street and Washington Avenue were larger than standard streetcars of the day, reached speeds of 38 miles per hour, and offered services for 5 or 6 cents per ride.
