The Federal Writers Project employed workers to record local histories, and the Federal Music Project collected, transcribed, and recorded vernacular songs. The program represented symphonies, orchestras, concert bands, dance companies, and vocal groups nationwide. John Vachon’s image of a music company captures the diverse cultural traditions in Newport News at that time.
