Newport News, Virginia, March 1941 Gelatin silver print (photograph), printed 1984 During the Depression, many Americans were frustrated with prohibition laws, and President Roosevelt vowed to end the restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages. On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment repealed the law, but as suggested here many institutions like the Salvation Army continued to encourage temperance as a way to improve people’s lives.
