Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada, from Lone Pine, California, 1944 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 During World War II, Adams made heroic images of American landscapes in what he later described as a patriotic effort to show Americans what they were fighting for. The three photographs to the left, all made in 1944, focus on improving weather—a winter storm passing, sunshine breaking through clouds, and dawn’s arrival—as if expressing Adams’s hope for peace. Winter Sunrise and Mt. Williamson may have additional meanings. These two landscapes were made while Adams was photographing the Manzanar War Relocation Center, a concentration camp where Japanese-American citizens and residents were interned during the war. His book on the camp, Born Free and Equal (1944), was critical of the government’s prejudicial actions, and many copies were removed from circulation by those who saw his humanitarian statement as unpatriotic.
