Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 High Country Crags and Moon, Sunrise, Kings Canyon National Park, California, ca. 1935 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 When Adams was elected to the board of the Sierra Club in 1934, he used his photographs and leadership position to advocate for the preservation of America’s unspoiled lands nationwide. In 1936, he lobbied Congress on behalf of the club to designate the Kings Canyon region of the Sierra Nevada, seen here, as a national park. After President Roosevelt established Kings Canyon National Park in 1940, the Interior Department hired Adams to promote federal preservation efforts by photographing all of the national parks.
