Ossip Zadkine met her in New York, where he fled during World War II. Although Zadkine’s work is often starkly emotional, this lavishly gilded sculpture strikes a more decorative note. Nonetheless, the delicately rendered details, the slight turn of the head, and the hand resting on Janeway’s collarbone give the work a subtle sense of tenderness. Gift of Walter P.
