Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 Lodgepole Pines, Lyell Fork of the Merced River, Yosemite National Park, California, 1921 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 In the 1930s, Adams distinguished his work from that of the Pictorialist photographers, who used soft focus, hazy light, and gauzy filters to give their works a painterly quality. Earlier in his career, however, Adams made use of their dreamy style, transforming specific sites into romantic fantasies like the one seen here. When the work appeared in Adams’s first portfolio, Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras (1927), it had the vague title A Grove of Tamarack Pine. For later prints, Adams re-titled the work to identify its location and sharpened the scene’s contrast. Gift of Dr. and Mrs. T.
