Label TextAdolphe Braun French, 1812–1877 Alpine Landscape, ca. 1860 Albumen print (photograph) As a textile designer, Adolphe Braun began photographing flowers and still lifes in 1853 to help him create patterns for fabric. When he turned to landscape photography, he remained sensitive to texture, contrast, and composition, as seen in this alpine view. Notice how the raking light from the low sun causes each blade of grass and rock to shimmer while the faraway mountains fade into the haze. The figure lounging on the hillside offers a sense of the scene’s grand scale and models the leisure that viewers were meant to enjoy. Museum purchase and partial gift of Alice R.
