DescriptionThis is a woodburytype from the GALLERIE CONTEMPORAINE.Label TextÉtienne Carjat French (1828-1906) Émile Zola, 1875 Woodburytype Purchase, Horace W. Goldsmith Fund 83.225 In addition to his talents as a caricaturist, journalist, and editor, Carjat was a popular French portraitist who photographed many of the artistic and literary personalities of his time. He opened a studio in 1860 and continued to photograph through 1875, contributing his images to periodicals and publications such as the Galerie Contemporaine. Carjat's cartes de visite and albumen portraits were noted for their directness; this ability to capture the essential characteristics of his sitters may be attributed in part to his skill as a caricaturist.Exhibition History"A History of Photography: 15 Years at the Chrysler Museum," The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA; September 11, 1993-March 6, 1994.
