Label TextBRINGING IN THE COWS ON THE NORVEL RYAN FARM, AS TRAIN NO. 3 PASSES Shawsville, Virginia, 1955 L2004.11.16 The ancient, slow moving ritual of bringing in the cows is punctuated by a rush of speed. All but obscured by clouds of steam, smoke and dust, Train No. 3, The Pocahontas, streaks westward on its run all the way across the Norfolk and Western's main line, from Norfolk, Virginia, to Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio. This is a scene requiring a remarkable insight to visualize, as it looked so different during the day. The Pocahontas would have passed the Ryan farm in Shawsville, Virginia, about 7:45 PM. That's a bit late to bring in the cows for milking, but on this December day, Winston Link prevailed on the Ryans, father and son, Norvel and "Sonny," Norvel, Jr., to delay the process until the train was passing. Link called this photograph "Cow 13," because the lead cow is wearing that number. Today, trees have grown up so heavily along the right of way that making this photograph would be impossible.
