Label TextWilliam Roe Howell American, 1846−1890 Jefferson Davis, ca. 1875 Albumen print (photograph) Southern politicians selected Mississippi Senator and former U.S. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis (1807−1889) as president of the Confederacy in 1861. Following the Civil War, the former plantation owner and slaveholder was captured, indicted for treason, and imprisoned for two years. President Johnson ultimately granted him amnesty in 1868, and Davis avoided politics for the remainder of his life. He moved abroad for several years, and this portrait photo was taken later in a New York City studio. Gift of David L. Hack and Museum purchase, with funds from Walter P.
