DescriptionThe David L. Hack Civil War Photography Collection. This is a black and white photograph of Ulysses S. Grant in uniform seen from the mid-section and up. This is from _Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the War_ (Hack Collection No. 2].Label TextStudio of Mathew B. Brady American, 1823−1896 Lt. General Ulysses Simpson Grant, 1864, printed ca. 1890 Platinum print (photograph) In March 1864, around the time this photo was taken, President Lincoln promoted Ulysses S. Grant (1822−1885) to lieutenant general, making him commander of all Union Army forces. Grant had distinguished himself in battles in Tennessee and Mississippi, and Lincoln respected his aggressive leadership style. After another year of fighting, Grant secured victory for the Union with the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army on April 9, 1865. Photographic portraits made him a recognizable war hero across the country, and this popularity later helped Grant win two terms as president. Gift of David L.
