DescriptionThe David L. Hack Civil War Photography Collection. This object shows two photographs. The first shows Ulysses S. Grant in portrait with his full body. He is dressed in a suit with a long jacket. He is turned at an angle so as to appear almost in profile. Behind him there is a Doric column and a Greek styled drape. Underneath this picture a description reads "Ulysses S. Grant As President of the United States." The second picture is also of Ulysses S. Grant. He is dressed in his military uniform, facing toward the camera, seen from his head to his thighs. He has one hand resting in his pocket and the other resting inside his vest. The description reads "Ulysses S. Grant. At the age of Forty-three. Taken at Philadelphia, May 1865, in the uniform of a General of the United States Army, and pronounced by Col Fred D. Grant in a letter to us dated Aug. 24, 1886 the best picture (at that date) of his father extant. This is from _Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the War_ (Hack Collection No. 2].
