Henry Wirz (1823−1865), the commander of the Confederate prison camp near Andersonville, Ga. Wirz was convicted of committing atrocities against Union prisoners and hanged on November 10, 1865, in Washington, D.C. The teams of professional journalists who attended this and other major Civil War events often included illustrators and photographers like Alexander Gardner. Gift of David L.
