InscribedCross estate stamp at lower left. The work is inscribed in pencil on the verso: "H. E. Cross", and also carries several other inscriptions in French, one of which appears to be "Chines lièges près de la mer", and another which we have not as yet deciphered.

DescriptionThis watercolor is a preliminary study for a painting. The right of the watercolor has an overlaid grid in graphite. There are sketches of sailboats also in graphite at the upper right. On one of these sailboats is inscribed the French word "rouge" (red). The water depicted in the background of the watercolor is blue and the trees that on on the land are brown and green.ProvenanceFrederic M.
