He finds menacing forms in the natural topography. Chikamaro trained in the Utagawa and Kano schools, but in the year of this series he changed his name to Kyōsaid, meaning "crazy." In the following years he became one of the most outrageous, political, and provocative of traditional Japanese artists, nicknamed the "demon" artist for his prints of the 1870s. he lived well beyond the end of the Tokugawa shôgunate. He was visited by French artists who traveled to Japan, and he showed his prints at the 1883 Paris Exposition.
