Label TextUtagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III Japanese, 1786-1865 Artist Presenting a Print to a Warrior Woodblock print on paper Ukiyo-e woodblock prints often told stories. In this scene a man kneels before a warrior seated on a decorated mat and armed with a sword. He appears to present a woodblock print on paper. The subject is an armed warrior followed by a humbly dressed retainer carrying a sword. The space is organized on dramatic diagonals typical of Ukiyo-e. French artists were captivated by this system for indicating depth in two-dimensional works of art, which presented an alternative to the Western and European system of one-point perspective perfected in the Renaissance. Toulouse-Lautrec developed his monogram "remarque" in imitation of the collector marks and signatures on Japanese prints that he saw in Paris.
