DescriptionJapanese print. Three figures depicted.Label TextUtagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III Japanese, 1786-1865 Utagawa Hiroshige II Japanese, 1826-1869 Kokawa-dera in Kii Province, No. 3 of the Saikoku Pilgrimage Route: Shibukawa Sadayu, from the series Miracles of Kannon, 1859 Woodblock print on paper This marvelous print is from a series that combines travel and sacred history as it follows the traditional Buddhist Saikoku pilgrimage route joining 33 temples in the Kansai region, each possessing an important image of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. Number 3 shows Kannon healing a child. The Goddess of Mercy floats serenely above a wall, while the temple itself is shown behind her in the distance. French artists were mesmerized by the freedom with which Japanese artists overlaid scene with script and text, as seen here. Toulouse-Lautrec imitated the effect in his posters and in theater programs like "The Box with the Gilded Mask."
