Label TextAttributed to the Master from Heiligenblüt South Tyrol (northern Italy), 1500s The Holy Family from an Adoration Group, ca. 1520–25 Polychromed wood Originally painted in brilliant colors and touched with gold, this delicately carved Holy Family belonged to a larger sculptural group depicting the Adoration of the Magi—an event fully portrayed in the painting at left. To ensure the viewer would see Christ as divinely conceived, Joseph is shown as a grey-bearded elder well beyond the age of fathering a child. He is also placed behind the Virgin and Child, stressing his subordinate role as a caretaker of his divinely favored wife and son.
