In 1851, the French Commission of Historical Monuments selected him as one of five photographers to survey the conditionof architectural monuments. In Arles, he recorded the church of St.Trophîme and its famous Romanesque cloister. This view of the north gallery, made on a second visit in 1853, shows the iron tie rods stabilizingthe barrel vaults. Baldus sold prints from his negatives in different formats and contexts. This one appeared in an album commissioned by a railroad company that featured important sites along its route.
