Pennsylvania Democrat James Buchanan (1791−1868) preceded Lincoln as America’s 15th president, holding the office from 1857 to 1861. Buchanan likely sat for this carte-de-visite photograph in Mathew Brady’s Washington, D.C., studio and gallery, which had opened recently in January 1858.
