DescriptionA wood engraving of the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac. The monitor is shown with U.S. flag flying, smoke coming from turrets, one box like superstructure forward and two hatches aft. The Merrimac flies a large flag with one white horizontal stripe and nine stars on a dark field. The smokestack shows seven wire struts and a projection around the opening. A fort among reefs flies the U.S. flag in the right background. The shell splashes in the foreground resemble rushes growing in a swamp.
