DescriptionThis is a photograph of a scene in New Mexico.Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 Winnowing Grain, Taos, New Mexico, ca. 1929 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 Adams made this photograph for the book Taos Pueblo (1930), which he coauthored with writer Mary Hunter Austin. Their shared authorship was unusual at a time when photographs in books were typically seen as mere illustrations, not as significant works in their own right. To assert the importance of his photographs, Adams chose not to use standard photo reprinting technologies and instead created all the images by hand. For each of the 108 copies, Adams printed 12 individual photographs on bookpaper that was hand-coated with light-sensitive emulsion. Gift of Dr. and Mrs. T.
