Label TextTakahashi Shōtei (Hiroaki) Japanese, 1871–1945 The Red Gate at Hongō in Clear Weather after Snow, 1926 Color woodblock print on laid paper This view of the Akamon, or Red Gate, in Tokyo’s Hongō District is the oldest of the Chrysler Museum’s Shin-Hanga prints. It dates from the liberal Taishō Period (1912–26), when the city of Tokyo thrived on cultural exchange with Europe and America. Notice that one of the figures in this image wears a traditional Japanese hat called a kasa, while the others sport Western attire. Although Shin-Hanga artists’ favorite subjects were historic structures and traditional farming practices, their urban scenes often acknowledged modern Japan’s increasing mix of cultures and clothing.
