It honors the three daughters of Susano-o, the Shinto god of seas and storms. The whole island is a sacred site, and it is forbidden to give birth or die there. This famous “floating” shrine is built on piers over the bay so that pilgrims may visit without stepping foot on the island and potentially violating its purity. Constructed in the mid-1500s, the shrine complex is a popular tourist destination and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
