DescriptionScene of a wooden bridge in the rain. This print was part of a 12-print commission for a calendar produced for the year 1953 from Pacific Transport Lines, Inc. This print was for the month of June.Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Arashiyama, Kyoto, 1952 Color woodblock print on laid paper Small figures with umbrellas scurry through the rain across the Togetsu, or Moon Crossing, Bridge near Kyoto. The famously romantic bridge received its name from a poem by Emperor Kameyama (1249–1305), who once went boating nearby on the Ōi River under a full moon. The publisher Watanabe chose this print to represent the month of June in a 1953 calendar commissioned by Pacific Transport Lines, an American company operating cargo steamships between Asian ports, Hawaii, and California.
