DescriptionScene of a boy fishing.

Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Lake Matsubara, Shinshū, 1941 Color woodblock print on laid paper The perfect stillness of this fisherman and his long bamboo pole convey a sense of tranquility, a major theme in Kawase Hasui’s work. Like most Shin-Hanga landscapes, the print positions us at eye level so that we can identify easily with the fisherman and share his experience of these quiet early-morning hours. Lake Matsubara is located in the sparsely populated and mountainous Nagano Prefecture, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1998.
