Label TextKasamatsu Shirō Japanese, 1898–1991 Gyotoku, Imai Bridge in Late Afternoon, 1939 From the series Eight Views of Suburban Tokyo Color woodblock print on laid paper Both Kasamatsu Shirō and his contemporary Kawase Hasui created images of this bridge in the eastern suburbs of Tokyo. Shirō intended his print for a series, but he never completed the larger project. As Japan’s participation in World War II increased, demand for landscape prints declined, and Shirō’s art took a new direction. He soon abandoned the Shin-Hanga style and joined the alternative Sosaku-Hanga, or Creative Prints, movement, in which artists did all carving and printing themselves instead of working with a publisher.
